The School Nursing Team can provide you with help, advice and support on many of the physical and emotional problems your child may encounter throughout their school life.

This year we are working with The Lancaster Model to offer an electronic questionnaire, each web-based questionnaire will take about 20 minutes to complete. You can find more information here https://www.thelancastermodel.co.uk/parents-guardians/

In line with government policy, the School Nursing service aims to involve families and young people in how resources are effectively targeted in the future.  In order to achieve this, please complete the online questionnaire about your child’s health and well-being within the next 7 days, this can be accessed here https://derby.hapi-system.com/school-entry or scan this QR code

As your child progresses through their school career your child will be asked to complete a further health questionnaire in year 6 and again in year 9.  You will receive a letter informing you about this nearer the time. By completing the questionnaire you not only help us to plan future services, but also ensure that your child gets the health and well-being support they need.

  • Football Team Match Report vs St Albans

Wed 12 Oct 2022 Mr Gilbert

    St Albans 3 – 3 Borrow Wood

Borrow Wood took on St Albans in their first away match of the season. St Albans took an early lead but Borrow Wood replied soon after when a long-range strike from Aaron was palmed back into the area by the St Albans goalkeeper where Josh was lurking to tap in for the opener. The crossbar was rattled by Raife and Aaron twice in the following minutes. A Buddy strike following the interception of a goal kick gave Borrow Wood the lead at half time.

The start of the second half was dominated by the home side with them scoring an equaliser however Borrow Wood broke on the counter attack and Aaron slotted comfortably past the keeper to take the lead again. Borrow Wood continued to weather the storm of continuous attacks with Tapiwa, Douglas and Andreas all making last ditch tackles as well as a vital bloke by Joel. Xander’s quick reactions in goal meant he could pounce on any crosses and shots from close range. With ten minutes remaining the St Albans striker snuck in behind the defence capitalising on some miscommunication and calmly finished to take it to 3-3.

The last 5 minutes of the game was spent with Borrow Wood on the attack with several shots just missing the target and final passes intercepted by the St Albans defence. The final moment of the game saw Raife’s cross unfortunately avoid Josh and Buddy who had sprinted into the box, eventually going out for a throw in. The ref blew his whistle and signalled full-time in what was a thrilling, end-to-end, and extremely physical, 60 mins of football which both teams played in the right spirit. Borrow Wood are currently unbeaten with a win and a draw in their opening two matches scoring seven goals in the process. We now enter a winter break with the next fixture due to be played in March.

Man of the match went to Tapiwa for his energy to break up St Albans' attacks and set us up to attack ourselves in a performance where he covered every blade of grass on the pitch.

  • Borrow Wood Primary School Y6 Boys Experience Success

Fri 30 Sep 2022 Mr Gallagher

Thursday 29th September 2022 saw the very first football match for our Y6 Boys team. There was a sense of apprehension around school in the lead up to the game with the coaches (Mr Saeed and Mr Gilbert) determined for the match to go ahead despite the adverse weather conditions.

Prior to the match, the boys had only taken part in one training session but it was clear from the start of the game that this was not going to phase them. Borrow Wood took early control of the game and managed to string some passes together with Harry looking dangerous down the left wing. Unfortunately, and definitely against the run of play, Dale Primary School got the first goal of the game with their striker making a great connection with a volley that flew past Xander in the Borrow Wood goal. The Borrow Wood boys did not let this discourage them and they set about getting themselves back into the match.

The defence of Antonio, Douglas and Andreas did a great job of putting an end to the Dale Primary charge as they attempted to get a second goal. Borrow Wood Primary School found their own way back into the match but not how the boys would have dreamt of it happening the night before. Harry took possession of the ball and made his way towards the goal and hit a certain cross into the box. Fortunately for our boys, the ball deflected off the Dale Primary defender and flew past the wrong-footed goalkeeper. 1-1!

Aaron was being a nuisance in the middle of the park and was showing the rest of the players what quick feet he had. He had a few sighters of goal and was determined to get on the scoresheet…and that is exactly what he did. It might not have been the long distance strike had had dreamed of but in a goalmouth scramble, we saw Aaron manage to turn the ball into the goal.

The weather was not favourable during the match with the heavens opening…it was like a cold windy night in Stoke. This did not dishearten the gathered supporters who encouraged our boys admirably in the rain to push forward.

Into the second half we saw an event that is not normally seen in a game of football. Xander was taken out of goal and replaced by Kai who took his place between the sticks. As the game progressed, we saw debuts for Joel and Buddy who got stuck in straight away. After another goal for Dale Road Primary and an own goal by another of their defenders, the game was poised at 3-2 to Borrow Wood.

What we witnessed next can only be described as majestic and even had the opposition coaching team applauding. Joshua picked the ball up close to the half way line and he set off. He weaved his way past one, two, three defenders and found himself in the box. All that was lacking to one of the best goals ever seen was the finish. His shot was well parried by the Dale Road Primary goalkeeper but, like a fox in the box, Buddy was on hand to rifle the rebound into the roof of the net. Buddy set off to celebrate with his teammates.

The final whistle was blown and much to the delight of our boys and the relief of the coaches, Borrow Wood Primary School had won 4-2. The decision was made that Harry would be awarded for the Man of the Match with his performance being described by Mr Gilbert as if Nathaniel Mendez-Laing had been on the pitch himself.

Our boys will be visiting the fortress that is St. Albans in the next game and we would like to congratulate the boys for being unbeaten so far this season…

  • Predicted Extreme Heat Weather Warnings

Fri 15 Jul 2022 Borrow Wood Primary School

Yesterday schools received advice from the Department of Education.

    “Predicted Extreme Heat Weather Warnings

The Met Office has extended an amber extreme heat warning for Sunday 17 July, Monday 18 July and Tuesday 19 July, as temperatures will build this weekend and early next week for much of England and Wales.

Temperatures could be in excess of 35°C in the southeast, and more widely around 32°C within the warning area, with Monday and Tuesday most likely to see temperatures around this level.

There is clear government guidance on looking after children and those in early years settings during heatwaves, including the use of ventilation, keeping children hydrated, and avoiding vigorous physical activity, encouraging children to wear loose, light coloured clothing and sunhats with wide brims, to use sunscreen, and providing them with plenty of water.

Individual school leaders are responsible for managing their own local circumstances. We are not advising schools to close.”

In response to this advice please note the following:

    • Send your children to school in the lightest, loosest clothing they have (no uniform required). No sleeveless items of clothing permitted.
    • Ensure they have filled water bottles with them – you might want to add ice to the bottle so that at the start of the day their drinks are cool.
    • Ensure they have sun tan lotion on and wear a hat to school.

At school we will do the following:

    • All windows and doors will be opened as early as possible in the morning and blinds will be pulled down.
    • The use of electric lights will be kept to a minimum.
    • Children will be told to drink water throughout the day and to refill their water bottles regularly.
    • There will be no PE lessons indoors or outdoors.
    • Morning break will be outside under the trees and not on the open areas of the playground or fields.
    • Lunch break will be indoors as by this time the temperature is predicted to be over 30 degrees.
    • Classroom activities during the heatwave will be adapted so that the children are kept as cool and comfortable as possible.
    • School will provide an ice pop for every child as a cooling treat on Monday and Tuesday. (I have just bought ASDA out of 800 ice pops!)

Monday is our transition day and children will be moving to their new classes so it is really important that children attend school. Staff will be on hand to support children and check in on them throughout the day.

    Many thanks

    Zoe Fletcher

  • Creative 6 Visit to Derby College

    Tue 28 Jun 2022 ZF

Some of our children have been doing a creative arts project with Usha, our creative mentor. The project was based on exploring empathy and sharing life experiences, including during the pandemic.

The children visited The Round House to see their work on display in the main library.

  • Year 5 - Halle Orchestra Event

    Tue 28 Jun 2022 ZF

What a fantastic opportunity for our Year 5 children to listen to and play alongside the Hall Orchestra!

Schools from all over Derbyshire and Derby City came together on 24th June at The Derby Arena to enjoy singing, dancing and playing a wide range of instruments. Borrow Wood children have been learning the violin all year they were part of the string section.

Other schools contributed with flutes, ukeleles, trombones, clarinets, trumpets and violas.

It was a wonderful celebration of music!  This what some of our children had to say:

    • “Really good fun. We got to play, sing, do actions and dance. We watched the Halle as well.”
    • “I found it fun to sing along and listen to the Halle orchestra.”
    • “I liked it because it was a new experience. I know how to play but sometimes I get mixed up. I learnt not to be nervous.”
    • “Brilliant experience because it is really unusual for children to play with an orchestra. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I was thinking this wasn’t going to be good fun but it was.”
    • “Good experience because you can learn to play the instruments and you start off not great but you can see if you practise you can become good at it.”
    • “Fun! Because we could listen to all kinds of music and we could do the dancing and I have never seen that type of dancing before.”

  • Jubilee Picnic

    Fri 27 May 2022 ZF

    Jubilee Picnic

We have had the best of lunch times today with all of our children from Nursery to Year 6 having a picnic together on our upper field.

The weather held although it was a bit on the windy side blowing our bunting into knots!

It was lovely to see all the children mixing with the older children helping the younger ones play.

There was a wonderful sense of freedom seeing them all running around, laughing and playing dressed as queens, kings, princes and princesses with the rest of us dressed in red, white and blue.

A fitting end to the half-term!

  • Homework Celebration

Fri 27 May 2022 Mr Gallagher

On Thursday 26th May, all the boys and girls had the opportunity to go into the upper hall to view all of the wonderful half-termly homework that had been brought in. As always the standard was incredibly high and showed just how talented our pupils are.

The team of Mrs Molloy and Mrs Cook were tasked with judging the entries and choosing a winner from each class. In assembly today, Mr Gallagher presented the winners with a £5 book token.

We are already looking forward to seeing what the children produce next half-term and we will be again giving parents/carers the opportunity to come into school and see the homework.
