Borrow Wood Primary School Y6 Boys Experience Success

Thursday 29th September 2022 saw the very first football match for our Y6 Boys team. There was a sense of apprehension around school in the lead up to the game with the coaches (Mr Saeed and Mr Gilbert) determined for the match to go ahead despite the adverse weather conditions.

Prior to the match, the boys had only taken part in one training session but it was clear from the start of the game that this was not going to phase them. Borrow Wood took early control of the game and managed to string some passes together with Harry looking dangerous down the left wing. Unfortunately, and definitely against the run of play, Dale Primary School got the first goal of the game with their striker making a great connection with a volley that flew past Xander in the Borrow Wood goal. The Borrow Wood boys did not let this discourage them and they set about getting themselves back into the match.

The defence of Antonio, Douglas and Andreas did a great job of putting an end to the Dale Primary charge as they attempted to get a second goal. Borrow Wood Primary School found their own way back into the match but not how the boys would have dreamt of it happening the night before. Harry took possession of the ball and made his way towards the goal and hit a certain cross into the box. Fortunately for our boys, the ball deflected off the Dale Primary defender and flew past the wrong-footed goalkeeper. 1-1!

Aaron was being a nuisance in the middle of the park and was showing the rest of the players what quick feet he had. He had a few sighters of goal and was determined to get on the scoresheet…and that is exactly what he did. It might not have been the long distance strike had had dreamed of but in a goalmouth scramble, we saw Aaron manage to turn the ball into the goal.

The weather was not favourable during the match with the heavens opening…it was like a cold windy night in Stoke. This did not dishearten the gathered supporters who encouraged our boys admirably in the rain to push forward.

Into the second half we saw an event that is not normally seen in a game of football. Xander was taken out of goal and replaced by Kai who took his place between the sticks. As the game progressed, we saw debuts for Joel and Buddy who got stuck in straight away. After another goal for Dale Road Primary and an own goal by another of their defenders, the game was poised at 3-2 to Borrow Wood.

What we witnessed next can only be described as majestic and even had the opposition coaching team applauding. Joshua picked the ball up close to the half way line and he set off. He weaved his way past one, two, three defenders and found himself in the box. All that was lacking to one of the best goals ever seen was the finish. His shot was well parried by the Dale Road Primary goalkeeper but, like a fox in the box, Buddy was on hand to rifle the rebound into the roof of the net. Buddy set off to celebrate with his teammates.

The final whistle was blown and much to the delight of our boys and the relief of the coaches, Borrow Wood Primary School had won 4-2. The decision was made that Harry would be awarded for the Man of the Match with his performance being described by Mr Gilbert as if Nathaniel Mendez-Laing had been on the pitch himself.

Our boys will be visiting the fortress that is St. Albans in the next game and we would like to congratulate the boys for being unbeaten so far this season…
