Reading – 9.00- 9.30am

Please write today’s date in your yellow reading book. This must be underlined with a ruler.

Monday 25th January 2021

This week our text is called:  ‘Mountains and Volcanoes’. I would like you to read through the text carefully.  Underline any words that you are unsure of. We will begin to clarify some of these words tomorrow. It would be helpful to read the text aloud to see if you can add expression as you read.

Maths Arithmetic – 9.30am-9.50am

Open the slides below. In your Maths book, write today’s date and underline it with a ruler.

Monday 25th January 2021

Just like we do in class, I would like you to complete your times tables, related facts and arithmetic questions in your book. I will reveal the answers at the beginning of our live session. You do not need to time yourself, but if you would like to, there is a timer you can use on the powerpoint. You will need to have the powerpoint in ‘presentation mode’ to use it. Click on ‘Slide Show’ on the top tool bar, and then ‘from beginning’.

Maths Live Input – 9.50am -10.10am

Log into Microsoft Teams for a live session at 9.50am. It is important that you are on time as the session will start straight away. This will help you to understand how to complete today’s Maths task.

Maths Task – 10.10am – 10.30am

Today we will complete pages 139 – 141 (lesson 13) in our Power Maths book. Use the strategies we shared in the live session. When you have finished, send some photos of your work to Miss Sargison so that she can give you some feedback!

Geography 11.00- 12.00am

Revisit

Spend 5 minutes looking at the map of Europe that we first looked at last week. Try to remember some of the names of the countries.

Have a go at labelling as many countries as you can using https://world-geography-games.com/countries_europe.html

What will your high score be?

Main Lesson:

Write the date and learning target in your green topic book and underline them neatly.

L.O: Understand how Italy is divided

1.) First, start by watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5mpdzUlFmw

Write down some key things you notice in the video which tell you what Italy is like at the top of your page.

2.) Our lesson today will help us to think about what Italy is like as a whole country and we are going to ‘zoom in’ to find out how it is divided up into different parts, which we call regions.

Look at this map.

The white lines show us where one region ends and another begins....a bit like how England is split up into different counties such as Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire. Yorkshire etc.

3.) Can you spot how many regions there are? Try to count them. Write down the following sentence in your book...

I can see that there are ____ regions in Italy.

4.) Now have a look at https://online.seterra.com/en/vgp/3092

Just for fun, have a go at finding some of the regions of Italy – can you say them correctly?

5.) Now watch this video which shows an aerial view of Italy. That means it shows you a view as if you were a bird flying over the top of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_UTXHXTidw

I would like you to think about how the different regions of Italy are similar and different to each other.

You will know when a different region is shown because its name comes up in blue on the screen.

Activity

Over the next two weeks, we are going to look at some of Italy’s regions in a bit more detail.

This week we will start with Florence. Can you spot it on the map of Italy below?

1.) First of all download this powerpoint.

We are going to think about what makes Florence special. Look at the pictures and write down 3 reasons why you might visit Florence.

Next, read through the Florence fact file. If you are struggling to read it, open it in Microsoft Teams, click on ‘view’ at the top of the page and click ‘Immersive Reader’ The computer will then read it out to you. See below.

Task: Create a fact file of your own using a whole page in your topic book.

I would like to know the following:

What is it like in Florence?

Why should I visit?

How many people live there?

What would I see if I visited Florence?

You can use sentences and pictures to show me the answer to the questions.

Spelling 1.00pm -1.30pm

Complete the power-point task:  ‘Trace – Copy – Replicate’ straight into your spelling book.

Please write today’s date at the top of your page.

Download the powerpoints below which show you today's task.

English Task 2.00pm – 2.40pm

Today we will draft the ‘Introduction’ of our disaster story! When we looked at the introduction of Escape from Pompeii, we learnt that there were a few things we needed to include.

I have written these below to help you:

  • Describe the setting in detail using expanded noun phrases, similes and ambitious vocabulary.

  • Introduce the main character and tell us a little bit more about them such as what they like to do and where they like to go.

  • Introduce another character who your main character talks to in the introduction

  • Challenge – include a song that the locals sing about the disaster which is about to happen.

Think back to the model that Miss Sargison shared in the live meeting and draft your own introduction. You should aim to write at LEAST half a page.

DT 11.00am – 12.00am

Today we are going to think back to our designs that we made last week and how we might put them together to make a desk tidy.

First of all, see if you can answer the following questions about your design:

What does your desk tidy need to do?

Who is it being made for?

How will it be decorated?

If we were in school, today we would have played with some nets to see if we could make them into 3D shapes. It’s tricky for us to do this at home, but we can start to think about the types of net that we might need for our design.

Log onto https://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/polyhedron-net-animations.html and watch how each of the 3D shapes are made from a net.

When you have looked at a few different shapes, I would like you to go back to your designs from last week and try to draw 1 more idea which uses a different shape to the one you have already designed.

Can you think of how you might use two different shapes put together to make an interesting desk tidy?

If you have a printer and would like to have a go at my challenge, print out the net for a cube below and see if you can turn it into a 3D shape!

All of the features I would like you to include are in the red box below, and they are colour coded to show you where they are in my example.
