Geography 11.00- 11.30am

Today we will begin our topic on Italy!

Write today’s date and learning target in your book.

Monday 11th January 2021

L.O: Revisit learning about the globe and what it is made up ofFirst of all, look at the pictures which are all of Italy. What do you think about Italy now that you have looked at the pictures? What do you think it is like there?

Draw a mind map in your book to explore some ideas. Look at my picture to help you.

Where do you think Italy is? Have a think to yourself and then look at https://earth.google.com/web/search/Italy/@41.29085,12.71216,11.22003967a,1788630.78292196d,35y,0h,0t,0r/data=CnAaRhJACiUweDEyZDRmZTgyNDQ4ZGQyMDM6MHhlMjJjZjU1YzI0NjM1ZTZmGYAJ3Lqb70RAIRjPoKF_IilAKgVJdGFseRgCIAEiJgokCfK7xtjoP1BAEZbMGC8hBEpAGVu1uXUTMThAIRijAN2wH2XA

(It might take a few minutes to load)

How would you describe the shape of Italy? What does it look like?

Use the minus button (-) in the bottom right hand corner to see which countries are around Italy. Did you know it was next to them?

Today we are going to look at what a ‘globe’ is and how it helps us to find out where different countries are… Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7k7CeWDtWs

When using a globe, it really helps us if we can remember the different parts of the globe, what the oceans (the water) and continents (huge pieces of land) are that make up our world. They were all talked about in the video. It might help you to watch it twice.

Now watch the video of Miss Sargison explaining the different parts of the globe. It might be useful to make some notes in your book.

Globe.mp4

Still image for this video

You can now watch the continents song to help you to remember what they are! See if you can sing along!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6DSMZ8b3LE&list=RDK6DSMZ8b3LE&start_radio=1

How listen to the 5 oceans song…can you remember what they are?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6BE4VcYngQ&list=RDK6DSMZ8b3LE&index=2

When you think you can remember what they are, and where abouts they are, have a go at the task below. If you have a printer, it will be helpful to print it out, but if not, have a go at drawing it out in your book, or completing it as a digital document if you know how.

L.O: Explore how language and vocabulary have been used within a high quality text to create atmosphere and images for the reader

Today we are going to focus on the kind of language and vocabulary that has been used within Escape to Pompeii to really understand why it is such an effective text. We will firstly look at what Pompeii was like BEFORE the disaster.

We looked at pages one and two together in our live session today and picked out some key vocabulary which we thought described Pompeii well. It is now your turn to create your pictures using the vocabulary from the book. Look at Miss Sargison’s example to help you, which she will upload to Teams. There is also a good example below:

PE

Unfortunately as we aren’t in school, we won’t be able to do our skip to the beat unit as we planned..but I know you all love dancing! So let’s dance to the beat instead!

L.O: Understand the structure and purpose of a shell structure.

1.) Over the next few weeks we are going to have a go at making a pencil holder. Look at the pictures of shell structures on the powerpoint (the first slide). Write down the following questions and your answers in your book. I would underline each question with a ruler and write your answer below.

  • What is the purpose of the shell structures? (What are they made for?)
  • What material is it made from?
  • How has it been constructed?
  • Are the materials recyclable or reusable?
  • How has it been stiffened i.e. folded, corrugated, ribbed, laminated?
  • What size/shape/colour is it? What information does it show and why?
  • How attractive is the design?

2.) Look at the picture of a  ‘net’ of a cuboid on the second slide. A net is what we call a shape when it is flat, before it is made into a 3D shape. Look at the net carefully.

Again, write the following questions in your book, followed by your answers.

How are different faces (the flat sides) of the package arranged?

How are the tabs used to join the ‘free’ edges of the net?

3.) Now look at the 3 different pictures of nets on slide 3. Choose which one you think is best and why. I would like you to write a paragraph to explain which one you think is best and give reasons for your answers. Think about some of the things we have thought about today such as:

L.O: Analyse an effective setting description to create a success criteria for my writing.

Today we are going to start to build some of our own sentences to describe Pompeii before the eruption. First of all, watch this video. Make a mind map in your book of things you notice about Pompeii before the eruption happened.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3W_KLtX2VM&feature=youtu.be

In our live lesson, we looked at some good examples to see what we thought good descriptions should include.

These were:

Use all the senses

Interesting vocabulary to describe e.g. cramped

Expanded noun phrases

Similes (remember this just means that we compare one thing to another thing using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’, for example, as big as a mountain, the sun was yellow like a sunflower)

Fronted adverbials to give additional description of where things are

Begin sentences with a verb.

Using this list, can you find examples of each of them in the text below? If I were you, I would colour code each one just like I did in the meeting.

Here is the example we looked at:

If you are finding it tricky, you can download the extract which has already been highlighted below and the success criteria with some reminders on below:

Computing

Write today’s date and learning target in your book.

Science Part one – 11.00am-12.00am

Please write the date and learning target in your book:

Wednesday 13th January 2021.

L.O: Know what forces are and give examples of contact and non-contact forces.

This term we are learning about forces and magnetism. You may have already started this last week, but we are going to complete 2 of the online sessions today.

First of all log onto https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/what-are-forces-6dh3ec

When you are asked to pause the video,  write the question ‘What were the four examples of contact forces?’ in your science book and write your answers below. You can mark your own when the answers are given to you.

When the next pause point comes, you will need to write ‘What are two examples of non-contact forces?’ in your book, and write your answer below.

When the match the words task is displayed, please write these out in your book. I would like you to write the words which are correctly matched up with their definitions. Again, you can mark your own answers when they are displayed.

The next task you need to complete in your book will be deciding which forces are shown in the three pictures. Please draw the pictures in your science book neatly, and label them with the force which you think is being shown.

Your final task for this session is to draw out the table which is shown to you. You are given a number of scenarios and you need to say which force is acting in each case. You will need to draw the table in your book using a ruler. I would use a whole page for this. For those of you with a printer, I have made a template for you.

You can mark your own answers when they are shown.

You will complete part 2 of Science this afternoon.

Having looked at some of the English work that was returned to me yesterday, it is clear that some of you need some more time to finish yesterday's task. If you haven't finished the English task from yesterday, please use today's spelling slot to complete the task. IF YOU DO THIS, YOU DO NOT NEED TO COMPLETE TODAY'S SPELLING TASK.

You will find today's lesson more tricky if you have not completed yesterday's learning.

Spelling 1.00pm -1.30pm

Write today’s date in your spelling book. Download the powerpoint and complete the task in your spelling book.

Grammar Revisit 1.30pm-1.40pm

Log onto https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/how-can-we-measure-the-size-of-forces-c4vkcr

Complete the introductory quiz before beginning.

1.) When you are asked to pause the video, just like before, write the question in your book, followed by your answer.

E.g. ‘What is the difference between mass and weight? What are they each measured in?’

You can mark your answers when they are shared.

2.) The second task is to label the photo of a newton metre. If you don’t have a printer, you should draw it out in your science book as best you can. If you have a printer, I have produced a document that you can write on.

3.) The third task asks you to write how much is being shown on the Newton Meters. This is a tricky task but try to write down what is on the first newton meter (the white one)…For the orange one, think about the number that would come between 14 and 16. The Blue one is really hard so you don’t have to do it, but you might like to give it a go!

4.) The forth task asks you to write the question ‘How do we measure the weight of an object using a Newton Metre?’ Write this in your book and write your answer below.

5.) The final activity is to record the results of some objects which are being measured. Draw the table out in your book. You will need to pause the video while you do this.

The teacher tells you the measurements.
